Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.

Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward's sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

This is the first review I've ever made that made me nervous.
I have finished this story for months now but I am still very emotional about it.
This is a 4parts series book but you don't have to read all four books if you didn't like it (though I can not see why you wouldn't). Sure there will be questions left unanswered if you don't read them all and since it's a series, all books are continuous but each book great and won't keep you hanging in the end of each one. Once you've read one you probably won't be able stop anyway that there is no point in convincing you to try just one so moving on...

I do not believe that Stephanie Meyer is a great writer. She is certainly not on my top 10 favorite writers but this book is definitely on my top 5. I am not a fan of Meyer's writing skill but I am definitely a fan of her imagination.

This is my second favorite of all four.
Ah, just as I thought. I wouldn't be able to make a proper review with me all too emotional about this book so just buy it and I promise you, you will meet the greatest love of your life:-)

[ REVIEW 3 ] 若年層向けのハーレクイン・ロマンス評価：3 2010/05/04

アメリカやイギリスでベストセラーということで、小学6年生の姪に(邦訳を)プレゼントしようかと思ったのですが、内容を知らないでギフトにする訳にいかず購入して読んで見ました。
結論から言うと、タイトルに書いたように「若年層向けのハーレクイン・ロマンス」です。
一応、ジェーン・オースティンの「高慢と偏見」を下敷きにしているようですが、文学作品としての深さはない、というかそもそもそういう方向を目指した作品ではないですね。
同じ(ホラー)ファンタジーでも、ハリー・ポッターのようなスティーブン・キング顔負けの(人間の)業でドロドロという代物ではなく、肩が凝らずに読めるのでそういう系統が好きな方にはお勧めです。
私は、こういう読んで面白く罪のない作品は好きですが、「べたべたした恋愛物は嫌い」という姪には向かないようなので、プレゼントするのは止めにします。

[ REVIEW 4 ] Bella, you are opposite to ordinary. 評価：5 2010/04/28

一人称の物語の中で、ベラが自分の見た目を描写する場面が比較的少ない上に、彼女の顔が鏡に映った様子も自身のネガティブなコメントに始終している為、読者にはどんな感じの女の子なのかが判りづらいこのシリーズの中で、唯一客観的な表現が、エドワードがベラの危機を救った後の二人の会話の中に見られます。転校してきた高校での初登校の日、学校中の男子生徒の目に映った彼女のイメージをエドワードはこう言って、君は決して目立たないごく普通の女の子なんかじゃないと伝えます。自分は男なのでああ成る程、だからモテモテなわけなのねと納得したりしてしまいます。女性の目から見た魅力的な女の子と男性の目から見たそれは相当違うようですから。ならば、映画でヒロインを演じているクリステン・ステュワートは小柄で華奢な中性的美女なので、見た目は作者が言うようにまさにイメージ通りのキャラクターなのでしょう。朗読しているイリアナ・カドゥーシンは、時々疲労のせいなのかキャラクターの声が聞き分けにくくなる場面があったりもしますが、声優らしい表現力は充分で、老若男女の描き分けも巧みにサスペンスフルなファンタジーをたっぷり堪能させてくれます。実際、このシリーズを一度本で読んだ後、オーディオ版も購入して聞き直していますが、耳で聞くほうがより臨場感に溢れた展開になる上、毎回新しい発見をしたりと、何度聞いても聞き飽きない面白さに驚いたり、にやりとしたりと、ちょっと問題かなと思う位で、充分元を取っちゃったかなと思う今日この頃です。

[ REVIEW 5 ] 内容は少女漫画です。評価：3 2010/02/13

読んでみて、たまにはこういうのも悪くないなと思いました。
つまりこてこてのラブロマンスです。あまりこういうのは好きではないんですが、ここまでこてこてだと、かえって読み進もうかという勇気がわき上がってくるというものです。だから、なんだロマンスかと思う人にはお勧めしません。
しかも、ちょっとうざったいくらいぺたぺたなので、
こんな彼氏ができたら、友達減るだろうな、成績落ちるだろうな、私生活なくなるだろうな、なんていう現実的な考えが頭をもたげてしまうととたんに読めなくなってしまうので、可能ならこの作品世界にどっぷりと浸りきってみることをお薦めします。
それにしても、十代の男子はこんなに精神年齢高くないよね。。。。。
最初に翻訳を読んでから原書を読んだのですが、日本語訳はかなり意訳があるように思いました。また原書では１つの段落なのに翻訳本ではいくつにもばらばらになっていたりしました。
